What is brass?

Brass (or yellow copper) is an alloy of copper and zinc. Brass is rustproof, resistant to damp areas and easy to maintain. This makes brass a versatile finish.

Brass discolours due to oxidation. The layer that is created is also called 'patina', the brass can become darker, lighter and duller. This is easy to polish again.

You often see that vintage brass is not polished to new condition, this is because in some cases the value and age can be determined by the amount of patina that has developed.
